Transformative Spaces 

Concept: Transformation cannot happen in a vacuum. It requires a space that is conductive for metamorphosis. It requires a space that inspires each person that steps in to extend beyond his/her personal limits to access highest creative potential.

We provide and co-create such interactive transformative spaces.

In such transformative spaces, every individual becomes a vessel for the purest and most inspiring expression of individual and collective truth and beauty.

Transformative Spaces  – working progress III

  • For simplicity, we only allow movement along the x-axis.
  • Instead of a accelerometer/gyroscope, we decided to use a handheld that drives the position through buttons on the left and right.
  • IR sensor will be placed in a box in front of the user with the Arduino in it. Hand distance above it determines height of boxes.
  • The handheld is connected to the box via a 2 foot wire.
  • The box will be on a table and the visuals on a television on the wall behind it.
  • A button on the top of the handheld will stop the growth of the box and move on to the next box.

Good physical interaction should focus in creative thing, interaction between people, and the promotion of health through physical activities and devices. It should be two-way communication between reaction and response.

Many children who visit hospital for diverse problems such as difficulties dealing with anxiety, problems in socializing with peers, or those who can’t do anything without their mothers, they have such problems due to the digital devices because that only allowed to utilize one device without any physical activities.

I would define physical interaction as two way of process where the acts of listening and speaking is executed through a tangible medium, and not only the computer screen itself.

Transformative Spaces  – working progress I

The project explores responses to the challenges of contemporary space development and the relationship between the 2D and 3D.

The sketch allows me to place a cursor around the screen, and press to place a platform (cube).  I want to be able to toggle between platforms and grow, shrink , and delete them.

Arduino to Processing – II

We tried to control yet another simple Processing sketch using the Arduino. We went ahead and kept the pressure sensor as our standard test sensor as we tried to control a different Sketch.  Doing the exercise allowed us to strengthen our understanding of serial inputs and outputs.  The Processing Sketch was written by Eunice, the program initially distorted webcam output according to the mouse position.  We changed it so that the camera displays regular output when the pressure sensor is left untouched, and it then displays a pixilated image when the pressure sensor is being held.

Arduino to Processing – I

The Arduino Serial Monitor and saw that the output looked jumbled.  Since it was being displayed in ASCII, we downloaded CoolTerm and then were able to see the output as HEX.  We set up Processing to accept serial output, and mapped the intensity sent from a pressure sensor to a graph.  This was the first step we took to begin interacting with Arduino and external software

Sensors & Speakers

I were figuring out how to use sensors as the control for a speaker.  We started out with two photo-resistors, and then tried a pressure sensor.

Waving your hand over the photo-resistors changed the frequency of the speakers creating a simple interface for a possible musical instrument.  We then attached a pressure sensor, which actually worked better, and changed the sound coming out of the speaker by alternating how hard we squeezed the little sensor.

A Brief Rant on the Future of Interaction Design 

A Brief Rant on the Future of Interaction Design by Bret Victor, and Chapter 1 and 2 of The Art of Interactive Design by Chris Crawford, deal with different aspects of interactivity. Victor’s Rant deals with the potentials of human capability and quality of interactivity while Crawford reflects on a more theoretical side of interactivity.

On an abstract level, Crawford’s definition of interactivity as a cyclic process in which  listen, think, and speak, resonates clearly in contrast to many of the common aspects of everyday life that are considered interactive. In this sense, it’s not about whether or not the process takes place, its the the quality of the interactive process; good interaction occurs when listening, thinking, and speaking. That is a relationship between human and reaction .

Like Crawford, I would define physical interaction as a feedback-loop between two actors, one in which a clear path of communication is opened, through a variety of sensory experiences. A good physical interaction transcends the traditional boundaries between object and subject. The object is no longer a passenger on our journey. In A Brief Rant on the Future of Interaction Design, Bret Victor pleas for inspired exploration of human capabilities as they relate to interaction.

Most simply, physical interactive can organically be conceived as a person applies to the process of determining emotional or feeling responses to those situations. It would be the relationship between human and technology.

Good digital non-interactive technology

The Digital camera doesn’t take reaction with listing,thinking and speaking.

That has only a visualized function which taking image that is not much reaction and response with human.

Interactive in public

As you can see from the photo above, it is an interactive display in TimeSqure in New York.

It’s interesting to see how many people use the action even though it isn’t necessary to do. Most of people people waiting for shooting photo for displaying their face in the big screen.  People exciting a shooting because they could be a main character like a model. They are really try to fit in their face to the shape of circle for capture their face. After take a photo, they could be a main character of different images. Whenever their face coming in the building screen, people really exciting and enjoy it. Because, It would be actually the experience and interactive performance with friends and random people as a play in public. That is a real interactive in public.
